How are engineering internships viewed for finance recruiting? (UK)

I'm a first-year engineering student at a semi-target. I randomly applied to a summer internship programme at a large engineering firm and somehow got the offer. I have a BB spring, but in the case where I fail to convert it, is there any value in doing an engineering internship to boost my work experience for 2026 summer recruiting?

It would be an interesting experience, but if it doesn't help or is detrimental to my profile, I would rather find something else to work on over the summer.

Based on the most helpful WSO content, an engineering internship can still hold value for finance recruiting, especially if you frame it correctly. Here's how it could play out:

  1. Transferable Skills: Engineering internships often involve problem-solving, analytical thinking, and project management—skills that are highly valued in finance. Highlight these aspects on your resume and during interviews.

  2. Storytelling: Craft a compelling narrative about how your engineering experience has shaped your interest in finance. For example, you could mention how working on technical projects sparked your curiosity about the financial aspects of engineering firms or industries.

  3. Backup Plan: If you fail to convert your BB spring week, having a solid internship on your resume demonstrates that you're proactive and capable of securing competitive opportunities, even outside of finance.

  4. Networking and Recruiting: While an engineering internship isn't directly related to finance, it won't necessarily hurt your profile. However, you should actively network and pursue finance-related activities during the summer to keep your finance aspirations visible.

If you feel the engineering internship won't align with your long-term goals, consider exploring part-time finance internships, boutique investment banks, or even remote opportunities, as these might provide more direct finance experience.

If you can get an internship in something adjacent to IB that would be the ideal scenario if you cannot convert or get an offer with another corp fin/IB firm.

As someone who did do engineering internships before landing a PE role I can say that it won't hinder you from getting interviews or ACs with banks. It could also be a way to differentiate yourself from other candidates. Presumably you study engineering which you will get asked "why finance and not engineering?" - in this case you can say that you did try it out and know with certainty that engineering is not suited for you. What helped me during mine was trying to work on things that were similar to what your role would be at a bank e.g. technical due diligence. Obviously it might be more difficult to find these projects if you are in the very technical teams like structures or CFD.

Hope that's helpful but ping me if you have anymore questions
