How do I know if IB is for me?
I’m a first year student at a non-target school. I want to know before I make any big commitments if IB is the right fit for me. What are the typical characteristics of a banker? How will I know if I will survive in IB? For context I worked about 60-80 hours a week in part time jobs over the summer.
Based on the most helpful WSO content, it seems like you're already showing some of the key traits that could make you a good fit for Investment Banking (IB). You've demonstrated the ability to handle long hours, which is a significant part of the IB lifestyle.
Here are some other characteristics that successful bankers often have:
Stamina: The ability to work long hours and maintain a high level of productivity is crucial. You've already shown some capacity for this with your summer jobs.
Analytical Skills: Bankers need to be able to analyze financial data and make recommendations based on their findings.
Communication Skills: You'll need to be able to communicate complex financial concepts in a clear and concise manner.
Interpersonal Skills: Building relationships is a key part of the job. You'll need to be able to work well with a team and build strong relationships with clients.
Ability to Work Under Pressure: Deadlines in IB can be tight, and the stakes are often high. Being able to stay calm and perform under pressure is a must.
Curiosity: A successful banker is always eager to learn more about the financial industry and the clients they serve.
Remember, these are just guidelines. Everyone's experience in IB is unique, and there's no one-size-fits-all answer. It's also worth noting that surviving in IB isn't just about having the right traits. It's also about finding the right firm culture, maintaining a strong support network, and taking care of your physical and mental health.
So, if you're considering a career in IB, I'd recommend reaching out to professionals in the field, seeking internships, and continuing to learn as much as you can about the industry. This will give you a better idea of whether it's the right fit for you. Good luck!
