How do people coast?

Have read a lot of comments on here saying "why would you ever quit? It's so easy to just coast by and collect a check as an analyst if you aren't interested in IB/PE long term."  How does one actually do this?  Not respond to emails?  Complain to staffer? Would be interested in specific examples you've seen of analysts "coasting."

Worked with an analyst who was leaving and he was just hard to reach on the weekends, would dump any work he didn’t want to do on me and would push back on any large workstreams our associate would try to give him under the lightly veiled threat that he wasn’t sure how long he’d be around so he didn’t want his name on big workstreams.

Yeah I mean I would just do a poor job and people will stop staffing you on important work i.e. take a long time or don't respond on weekends, give some push back on big projects or push it off to a more junior analyst, etc. If you just want to coast and don't care about your year end rating might as well just not put in the time and not do well (especially if you plan on leaving and won't be around to receive your bonus)

I think the general idea is more so that you are under a 2 year contract. So barring any gross misconduct on your part, you probably won't be let go until after the 2 years are over. You'll probably be branded as the mediocre analyst on the team and get a shit bonus but possible to ride it out.

I think that's what people mean when they say don't quit and just ride it out.

The truth is that it’s actually a lot harder to get fired than people think, for legal reasons. Large companies basically need to create a paper trail of malfeasance so that they don’t get sued for wrongful termination.

I have a colleague in my analyst program (granted this is corp. fin not IBD) who has consistently showed up late to work for over 2 years now and has done a very average to below average job. But he still hasn’t been fired, I think because they figure it would take more time/effort/money to hire a new person and train them.
