How do you go "above and beyond" as analyst?

As analysts, we're given basic work (make profiles, spread comps, etc). A sign of a good analyst is obviously making sure that the work that comes off your desk is reliable but we're often told to go above and beyond on the relatively simple things that are given to us.

Can you guys that are in the grind or have already been through it give a few tips/examples on how to go above and beyond? Thanks.

I will let others chime in on the technical tips needed for investment banking but the distinguishing factors for a great versus average analyst are relatively consistent across the board between industries - above is a link where I cover a handful.

In the end, the biggest things to focus on are learning as you go (do not make the same mistake twice and make your leader repeat themselves) and what you led with in your title, going above and beyond or what I tell my analysts as “doing something excellently”.

What I mean by this is if I assign you a project or task that you not only research/gather the appropriate information, you absorb and analyze it and (if you can) provide me with your recommendation or at least options of paths forward. You will go far if you bring your leaders solutions, not problems as not only are you making their lives easier but you are also building important problem solving skills specific to your trade and judgement for when you are in a decision making position.

Remember though that not bringing the appropriate information/data and/or presenting an unclear analysis not only doesn’t solve the initial issue but actually compounds and makes more work for your leader as now they have to think through the problem fully themselves on top of figuring out what you are trying to present.

So whenever you are assigned a task or project, ask yourself “how can I do this excellently?” What would that look like? What questions might I receive when I present my results? What data or evidence do I need to support my recommendation? And if you have all that information in place, I guarantee you’ll already be performing above 95% of the pack.
