Though I haven’t interviewed at BBs, from what I hear and what I read on here, the recruiting process is more straightforward and lacks a lot of the informal structures found in IB recruiting in the US. There is less emphasis on target schools, diversity etc. Of course knowing the right people will help you a lot, but the chance of an online application being properly considered (without prior emailing/networking) should be considerably higher than in the States.

Not speaking fluent (if not native) German will almost certainly be a dealbreaker.

While speaking German is probably a plus, it is definitely not a dealbreaker. Once working at the firm, you will be able to pick up the language on the go (office proficiency) and all the (or the vast majority) of work product is in English anyway. While certain universities enjoy an advantage in terms of recruiting, it is possible to secure internships from clear "non-targets" and without networking (got to EB internship from non target). You need good grades, prior internship experience (e.g. Big Four) and perform well in the interviews. They are quite technical, compared to interviews in e.g. London.
