How good is UGA ?

I recently got a merit scholarship at UGA for their BBA Finance at Terry. I have heard mixed reviews on other posts on this forum, some stating how good Corsair society as well as strong placement,  others saying its not even a semi target.

Firstly, I would like to ask if my goal of working in IBD in UK is possible from UGA Terry.

Secondly, I would like to ask if the extra cost is justified for a better school (think ivys, top UCs OOS) which would be >80k a year compared to <7k at UGA (scholarship covers tuition, not cost of living) which I could comfortably pay in cash without any financing. The high tuitions would be financed through substantial debt that is not government subsidised so would place a great amount of stress on myself and my family.

I am super grateful for any advice on whether this extra cost is justified and how good UGA would be as a school.

Based on the most helpful WSO content, here’s what you need to know:

  1. UGA Terry and H1B Sponsorship for IBD in NYC/Chicago/SF/LA:

    • UGA Terry is not considered a target or semi-target school for top investment banking roles, especially in major financial hubs like NYC, Chicago, SF, or LA. However, the Corsair Society at UGA is a standout resource. It has a strong track record of placing students into competitive roles in investment banking, private equity, and other high finance positions. If you can secure a spot in Corsair and leverage its network, your chances of breaking into IBD improve significantly.
    • That said, as an international student, securing H1B sponsorship adds another layer of difficulty. Many banks are hesitant to sponsor H1B visas due to the costs and uncertainties involved. Larger banks (bulge brackets) and some elite boutiques are more likely to sponsor, but competition is fierce, and they often prioritize candidates from target schools.
  2. Cost vs. Benefit of Attending a Higher-Ranked School:

    • If you can gain admission to a top-tier school (Ivy League, top UCs, or other target schools), your chances of breaking into IBD and securing H1B sponsorship increase significantly. These schools have stronger alumni networks, better on-campus recruiting, and a higher likelihood of placing students into top firms.
    • However, the financial burden of attending such schools is substantial in your case. Taking on significant debt (>$80k/year) could be a heavy strain, especially if you’re not guaranteed a high-paying role post-graduation.
  3. Recommendation:

    • If you’re confident in your ability to excel at UGA Terry (e.g., joining Corsair Society, maintaining a high GPA, and aggressively networking), it could be a cost-effective option. The low cost of attendance minimizes financial risk, and you can still aim for IBD roles with the right strategy.
    • On the other hand, if you’re willing to take on the financial risk and can secure admission to a top-tier school, the investment might be worth it for the increased opportunities and stronger likelihood of H1B sponsorship.

Ultimately, the decision depends on your risk tolerance, financial situation, and confidence in leveraging UGA’s resources effectively. If you choose UGA, focus on excelling academically, joining Corsair, and building a strong network to maximize your chances.

i'll be honest

it's almost impossible for somebody to get into a top investment bank (or finance/consulting roles) from UGA. the small ones rarely sponsor visa. if the market is really good, you might have a slightly better chance. but if it's like market of earlier this year, internationals are struggling.

i would suggest going to uni in your country. UGA is an average american uni, idk why you want to study there, and its not ivy league tier either that it has prestige overseas. you're british? a similar level of british uni will provide you better opportunities just because you can more easily work there.

even in the UCs, if you want to do finance, only ones worth going to are UCLA and UCB.

Sorry for late response. I have been accepted to Georgia Tech, UT Austin McCombs, and Cambridge as well. I want to stay in the UK. Out of Tech and UT, is this path possible and better than taking the full ride at UGA?

My question here is whether GT/UT is better, maybe for more technical roles like more quant/SWE positions as well as traditional IB?

im assuming you will require visa to work in the us.

go to ut austin. it's better for ib, and same level for quant (but thats unrelated and you have to be a math olympiad genius for quant) and also has good swe outcomes. gtech is only slightly better for consulting.

i still think cambridge is a far wiser option for you, if you really want to live in the us, you can come back through an mba. besides, our current government is chaotic to say the least, and international students have tough times and the economic outlook doesnt seem as strong as projected. but if you really want to come to us, i'd pick ut austin.
