How Is Claude Changing IB?
I tried opus 4.7 on excel and I asked myself whether a Master student at LSE like me who wants to break into IB in BB should focus on valuation/ hard finance skills instead of something else. Sometimes I even wonder if IB will still exist in a couple of years. My question is where should somebody in my position invest his time and efforts to have a successful high finance career.
Investment Banking (IB) is evolving, but it remains a cornerstone of high finance. Based on the most helpful WSO content, here's how you can position yourself for success:
Focus on Core Finance Skills: Valuation and hard finance skills are critical. Mastering these areas will not only help you stand out during interviews but also ensure you're prepared for the technical demands of IB roles. Tools like Excel, Opus, and financial modeling are essential, so continue honing these skills.
Networking is Key: Breaking into IB, especially at a bulge bracket (BB) bank, requires more than technical expertise. Networking aggressively is crucial. Use LinkedIn, alumni databases, and events to connect with professionals in the field. Aim to have multiple contacts at each target bank who know your story.
Leverage Your LSE Brand: As an LSE student, you're already at a target school for IB. This gives you access to on-campus recruiting (OCR) and a strong alumni network. Make the most of these resources to secure interviews and internships.
Stay Updated on Industry Trends: While IB is evolving with advancements in AI and automation (e.g., tools like Opus), the core functions of deal-making, relationship management, and strategic advisory remain human-centric. Keep an eye on how technology is shaping the industry, but don't let it deter you from pursuing IB.
Prepare for the Long Game: IB is unlikely to disappear in the near future. Instead, it will adapt to new challenges and opportunities. Focus on building a strong foundation in finance, networking, and understanding the industry to ensure long-term success.
In summary, prioritize technical skills, leverage your LSE network, and stay proactive in adapting to industry changes. IB is still a viable and lucrative career path for those who are prepared and persistent.
