How is HL looking in Houston?

First post here, and probably will be going down a rabbit hole on these forums lately. 1st rounds in Houston are starting up next week for IB summer 2025. How is HL looking in Oil & Gas? Have seen people talk about Chicago and Dallas office, but seldom see people talking about Houston. Any info would be helpful.

Ah, the Houston scene, quite the hot topic! Based on the most helpful WSO content, HL (Houlihan Lokey) has been making some strategic moves in Houston, especially within the Oil & Gas sector. Here's the scoop:

  • Industry Presence: HL has been leveraging its strong restructuring (RX) practice to make a name for itself in the energy sector. They've been integrating their RX and Energy practices rather than running them separately, which is a bit of a unique approach compared to some other firms.

  • Strategic Moves: It seems HL isn't just relying on their New York office to handle energy restructuring. They've been bringing down members from their "elite" RX group to Houston, which shows a commitment to the local market.

  • Market Position: HL is considered a strong player in the middle market (MM), where a lot of the energy action happens. This is important because the MM is a significant part of the Houston IB landscape.

  • Firm Growth: There's chatter about HL hiring impressive Managing Directors (MDs) with extensive A&D (Acquisition & Divestiture) experience, which is crucial for Oil & Gas deals.

  • Firm Reputation: HL is often mentioned in the same breath as other boutiques, but it seems they've carved out a niche that puts them a step above in the Houston market, particularly in the energy sector.

So, if you're eyeing HL in Houston for a summer 2025 IB role, it looks like they're a firm with a solid footing in the energy space and a strategic focus on the local market. Just remember, while the firm is doing well, always do your due diligence and network to get the most current insights. Good luck with those first rounds – swing through those forums like a pro, and you'll be set!

Personal fiefdom of group head who apparently has to flee nyc and keep a beard to look tough. Face time heavy despite claim of good culture. Layoffs right before bonus every year. One person leaving per month on average. All they do is endless meaningless pitches and hoping to pick up some crumbs left by other banks. But guess what, they call themselves the No.1 investment bank in oil and gas lol
