How legit is the whole Corporate + Investment Banking edge for banks moving forward?

I've heard on occasion from some senior bankers that the whole combined Corporate + Investment Banking edge (i.e. JP/Citi/BAML) will be increasingly important for snagging deals in the future (have heard this especially from bankers FROM those banks...)

Also, Citigroup's strength in the league tables this year is at least somewhat attributed to this factor according to the article below (also mentions JP in similar light).
