How to break into Corporate Credit Analysis?

Hey Guys,

Please help me out here.

I got both BS and MS degree in finance from non-target schools. I am working at a rating agency (not big 3) at NYC, that provides ratings for our clients' counter-parties, usually are vendors and service providers. We conduct financial statement analysis and brief industry analysis.

I really want to make a transition to the Big 3 rating agency or large banks as a corporate credit analyst related area. I am planning to take Credit Training Program (NYU Continuing Education course; 5 full days cost $1300) and the public course Advanced Corporate Credit Analysis offered by Moody's (3 Full Days cost $3800).

Currently it is hard for me to knock open the doors for interview opportunities, I wonder if these training programs and public courses are beneficial and could potentially lead to career transition into Corporate Credit Analysis field.

I really need your inputs! Please advise if these classes are worth the time and money and let me know if you have better ways!

I don't think it will be difficult for you to break-in at all, and I don't think you need to take that class (as you likely will receive that training). If I were you, I'd initiate coffee chats at banks you're interested in ASAP and try to enroll in their credit/corp training programs (just about all the big banks have them).

Thanks very much for the advice. Networking is definitely important, and I will try harder on this part. But I have worked for 5 years, I don’t want to start at an entry level position. That’s why I’m trying to study as much as I can since my current area is not directly related. I thought those training programs at bank are only for fresh graduates and junior level new hire. I hope I can catch up by taking classes and prove I’m qualified for mid-senior level (2-3 years) position. Taking those classes (project based group study) at Moody’s with some current Moody’s employee (I guess there are) would also help me networking. This is just my thoughts.
