How to Build and Maintain a Network?

Hi All,

Currently in my Junior year at a state school along the West Coast.

I know how critical it is to network to secure internships, however I was wondering how to maintain a professional network throughout the years. During mys search, I have sent many cold emails, had info calls, and keep a running list of professionals I had discussions with. However, I do have a few questions regarding how to maintain that network:

  • How could someone effectively stay in touch? Other than reaching out to provide any career updates or developments, what else can someone discuss (if there hadn't been much personal commentary from initial conversations)?

  • How can someone begin an initial dialogue with someone they have met in the industry? Whether it was from someone who you met once at a gala or event, how do you reach back if you have their contact info and begin a conversation?

  • If you cannot meet in person, and had very few interactions with the individual you want to keep in contact with, do you email them, check in, and ask to set up a phone call to catch up? What are some key points to discuss other than personal career updates (i.e is it appropriate to ask them how work is going on their end, hat they have been up to since we last spoke?).

I really appreciate everyone's help. I outlined a few key points as a guide, but am extremely open to hearing anyone's opinion or commentary.

Thank you, all
