How to do an in person interview when working full time

All,

I have been in a FT process and have made it to the final round. Very exciting but the issue is the final round is in person and the firm wants me to come in mid week. I have no clue how to take time off with a weeks notice without raising red flags at my current firm. For add'l context we have a PTO freeze right now as my firm is super busy. I'm thinking of asking to move the final round to Friday where I would have the best chance of getting PTO approved but otherwise I'm stumped on how to approach. Also, any ideas on what excuse to come up with to get a day off?

ask for the friday move first - firms recruiting people who already have jobs hear this constantly and it won't hurt you. just say you have commitments at your current job you can't move mid-week. it reads as professionalism, not disinterest.

if they can't move it, the standard play is a partial day rather than a full one - 'i have a personal appointment, i'll be in after lunch' raises way fewer flags than a mysterious full day off during a freeze. doctor or dentist is the classic because nobody follows up on it. one sentence, don't over-explain.

and take the interview even if the logistics are ugly. final rounds are rare enough that a slightly awkward absence beats a withdrawn application.

Based on the most helpful WSO content, here are some strategies and excuses you can consider for taking time off for an in-person interview while working full-time:

1. Requesting a Schedule Adjustment

  • Politely ask the prospective firm if they can move the interview to Friday. This aligns with your best chance of getting PTO approved and shows you're trying to accommodate both parties.

2. Excuses for Taking Time Off

If rescheduling isn't an option, here are some plausible excuses: - Medical Appointment: "I have a series of medical tests scheduled that day and will need to take the morning/afternoon off." - Family Obligation: "My parents are out of town, and I need to be home for a service appointment (e.g., floor measurements, repair work)." - Emergency Errand: "I have an urgent personal matter that requires my attention during the day." - Feeling Unwell: "I'm not feeling well and will need to take the day to recover. I’ll be available by email if anything urgent comes up."

3. Short-Notice Strategies

  • If the interview is scheduled with very little notice, you can email your manager the morning of and say you're unwell or dealing with an emergency. This avoids the need for prior approval and minimizes suspicion.

4. Tips to Avoid Raising Red Flags

  • Keep your excuse simple and consistent. Overexplaining can make it seem suspicious.
  • If possible, schedule the interview early in the morning or late in the afternoon to minimize time away from work.
  • Offer to make up for the missed time by working extra hours before or after the day off.

5. Worst-Case Scenario

  • If your firm is in a PTO freeze and none of the above options work, you might need to take a calculated risk. Some WSO users have shared that they’ve used excuses like visiting a sick relative or attending a funeral, but these should be used sparingly and only if absolutely necessary.

Good luck with your final round!
