Sophomore at a non target school who just realized they want to transition in, what are the next steps?

Hi everyone, I'm a sophomore at a non target school who just recently realized I wanted to work in Investment banking in the future. But i'm worried i'm too late as summer 2026 internships have already opened up and I have nothing banking or finance related that I've done over my freshman year summer. Along with this, I have limited knowledge on technicals (I've been trying to learn the information as fast as possible) and I've just now started the process of cold emailing alumni. I'm looking for advice on what any of you would do in my situation

Based on the most helpful WSO content, here’s a clear roadmap for your situation:

  1. Start Networking Aggressively:

    • Cold email alumni and professionals in the industry. Focus on alumni from your school, even if they’re not in banking yet, as they’re more likely to respond.
    • Keep your emails concise: introduce yourself, mention your interest in IB, and ask for a quick call to learn about their experience.
    • Aim for consistency—send 15-20 emails daily over the next few months. Informational interviews can lead to more connections and eventually interviews.
  2. Secure a Part-Time Finance Internship:

    • Look for opportunities at boutique investment banks, private equity firms, or even wealth management firms.
    • Remote internships can work, but prioritize in-person roles if you’re near a major city.
    • Even if it’s unpaid, the experience will help build your resume and give you something to talk about during interviews.
  3. Learn Technicals ASAP:

    • Use resources like WSO guides, Vault guides, and Investopedia to build your knowledge.
    • Focus on financial modeling, valuation methods (DCF, comps, etc.), and accounting basics.
    • Consider taking online courses or joining finance clubs at your school to accelerate your learning.
  4. Leverage Your Spring Semester:

    • If you can’t secure a finance internship immediately, look for a part-time role during the semester.
    • Combine this with networking and technical prep to position yourself for sophomore summer recruiting.
  5. Target Sophomore Summer Internships:

    • Apply to boutique banks and smaller firms that may still have openings for summer 2026.
    • Use your network to get referrals or advice on how to position yourself for these roles.
  6. Build a Strong Story:

    • Develop a narrative about why you’re interested in IB. For example, mention how your recent exposure to finance sparked your interest and how you’ve been proactive in learning and gaining experience.
    • Highlight transferable skills from any past internships or extracurriculars.
  7. Stay Persistent:

    • Breaking into IB from a non-target school is challenging but achievable with consistent effort.
    • Don’t get discouraged by rejections—use them as learning opportunities to refine your approach.
