To be better at Hirevue, you gotta practice more. Like giving speeches, practice answers in front of a mirror. Record videos of yourself talking and observe how it looks. Lighting and angles can make you look more awkward. After enough iterations, you will realize how you look the best for the recording. 
While it will still feel robotic and will never feel more comfortable than an in person interview, practice will make it more comfortable and less awkward. I used to do Youtube videos so I was very comfortable talking to a camera, but I still hated Hirevues. 

I directly recruited for FT, so my path was to secure a referral (from someone I'd been cultivating a relationship with for a while) as soon as there was a posting so I don't have to apply and give hirevues.
