How to get interviews with a sub 3.5 GPA from Non-target?

Hey guys,

I've been applying to countless banks for 2023 SA positions, but have had little luck securing interviews. I'm guessing part of it is because my GPA is sub 3.5 at 3.37.

My GPA is heavily tanked from my first-semester Freshman 3.0 GPA where I was in a pretty bad mental state. My GPA has been a 3.5 not including that first semester and has been increasing each semester.

In terms of experience, I'm currently an intern in the FP&A department of a fairly large company and I am the incoming president of my school's PE/VC Club. I am solid on technicals and currently taking courses to sharpen my knowledge.

I know that I am more than capable of succeeding in IB. I just need a chance to interview but haven't been able to because of my lackluster GPA.

If anyone has some pointers on circumventing my lower GPA, I'm all ears.

Thanks.

You need networking and luck. If you haven’t been networking already with alumni and trying to get them to pull for you to get an interview, you’re kinda fucked (it’s getting pretty late in the 2023 recruiting cycle).

Would also make sure you are applying for MM and regional banking roles - your chances of landing a NYC EB/BB were already slim.

To give you some perspective I had a 4.0 at a non-target and didn’t get a single BB/EB first round (besides prerecordings), even with networking. Unfortunately there are going to be plenty of non-targets with previous IB internships, similar school club experience, and solid GPAs.

Landing a role is a combination of preparation, but also numbers + luck. Make sure you’re applying everywhere and not being picky because you’re not in a position to do so. Good luck.
