This depends on your experiences you're coming in with and your ability to convince them you are on the same level as the analysts at that group.

I lateraled from a boutique to a BB and was told that because I didn't have much M&A experience, I would have to move back a year. However, because I had similar experience and knowledge in the sector they cover, as well as a completed non-M&A deal on my resume, I was able to make the case to keep my current analyst position.

If you were at a different sector from your first bank, it will be harder to keep your position as the new group would not think you have as much "sector experience" as people in the group at your same position.
