I've talked to analysts, associates, VPs, and MDs at a few banks (Moelis, HLokey, and a few other lesser-known banks) and all of them said they forwarded my resume to recruiting but have not gotten a first round interview yet. My resume is pretty solid but I go to a nontarget.
What could be the reason that I'm not getting a first round interview? Is it because I go to a non-target? I've gotten interviews at other BB banks and put forth far less effort in networking.

networking lesson 101 (ok, its not 101, but it is close):
When someone says they will forward your resume, unless you know the person very well, take control of the process. I typically use something along the lines of "I appreciate the offer to pass my resume along. I know you are incredibly busy and I am happy to take the lead on this process. Who would you be forwarding my resume to? I will get in touch with them directly." Something along those lines.
That way, you know that your resume is actually sent and you have someone to follow up with in HR.
On the other hand, I have gotten more than a few interviews from people that I really networked with for 4-6 months prior
Another thing to remember is that a number of the smaller shops are later in the recruiting process. If you get offers from BB, you can use that as leverage to accelerate the process.
From my experience boutiques are extremely picky, especially from non-target. MD from BX said he would make sure my resume was looked at, doesn't mean it was chosen for interviews. Just because they say they will forward your resume to recruiting doesn't mean you will be selected for 1st rounds.
