I made a mistake
Hey guys I work on the markets side. I was dealing with some excel data and made a few mistakes. The data was presented in an internal meeting and I felt so so so ashamed and embarrassed. I cried my eye balls out and am still crying as I write this. I made such a stupid fucking stupid mistake that it pains me to think that how can I screw up things after spending my entire morning on making this work. I am currently on a rotational grad program and I really like this desk. But shit like typos, this excel error. Idk what the team might be thinking about me. I hate this. I hate my life. Please tell me what the best way to handle such situations is. Please also share your biggest fuck ups and how you got through them
At least the government is giving an extra unemployment now.
My 2 cents would be to always try and be proactive about things. Made a mistake? Make sure to correct it asap and follow up with your team. Even if they notice it. It goes a long way to show that you're trying and care about doing things right. It happens to me all the time still, but I just engrave the mistake and my mind and make sure to not do it again.
For mistakes bigger than a typo, a strategy that I use is just come back to the team with the correct data/info, etc. and specify where I went wrong and how I'm fixing it going forward. Doesn't feel great to admit fault and be specific with the team but I think helps in showing that you care.
Lastly, mistakes happen... to everyone. You literally can't do anything about whatever mistake you made earlier today. Gotte move on from it and focus on other things. Crying won't help, worrying won't help. Just make sure to not do it again.
Dude relax. Everyone fucks up. Even if you fucked up so bad that you get fired, it isn't the end of the world. Just think, what is the worst thing that can happen. Worst thing about getting canned (outside of the money) is the hit to the ego and the embarrassment. Once you get passed that, meh. You will still have your health, food, water, and shelter. You good.
Relax man, it's gonna be alright. Own up to it and make sure it never happens again. It's just a spreadsheet, nobody died, don't be so hard on yourself. One time I deadass overslept and came late to a client meeting. I thought I was gonna die and also freaked the fuck out but in hindsight, nobody can stay mad at this small stuff forever so long as you're making an effort and don't let it happen again you'll be alright.
Mistakes happen all the time. The best thing you can do is own up to your mistakes. Saying things like “I messed up and did ... instead of ...” or “Thanks for pointing that out. I’ll be sure to look out for that next time” can help you recover from these situations. Also, you’re in a rotational program so I highly doubt they expect you to be sending out phenomenal work. And even if you weren’t on a rotational program, internal presentations have mistakes on them ALL the time. They’re internal and that’s kind of the point - work out all of the flaws internally so that the client materials are as close to perfect as possible. Making a mistake isn’t the end of the world. It’s just another opportunity for you to learn something new.
