IB Job with Australian Degree?
Just wondering if I would have a shot at getting a job with an IB in say New York or London with an Australian university degree? I ask this because well, compared to USA and England, Australia is an IB minnow so there are a lack of employment opportunities.
There r loads of aussies and kiwis working here in london though most of them seem to be temping
so having a degree from an Australian university doesn't start you off with a black mark? I have heard that some IB firms view the uni's here as 'second rate'
To be honest I know absolutlely nothing of Australian unis but there's a huge need atm for people to do fairly mundane work which can give u the break u need, having said that I can't think of one senior aussie at my firm - is this the exception rather than the rule?
Depends on your school really. I know ANU, Macquarie and Univ. of Melbourne are held in good esteem. At the MBA level, AGSM and Melbourne Business School are well-regarded internationally. For placement in NY or London, I'd recommend doing a year or semester abroad in the city of choice. Leverage that, network, get a few contacts, and apply. The most successful way of breaking through is via a strong contact on the inside.
Failing that, I'd look for opps around the pacific rim. Working at a reputed BB in Hong Kong and lateraling to NY/London after 2 years. Even an analyst stint at Macquarie Group will open up a slew of options in this part of the world.
Is University of Sydney held in high esteem outside Australia in your opinion, I know it's held as superior to both ANU and Macquarie inside the country (especially in Sydney).
Does anyone know anything about how University of Melbourne are thought of?
As far as I know Uni Melb is regarded as the best
I was in Australia...studied at UNSW which is supposed to be one of the better Australian schools. Then I transferred to an ivy in US for the better recruiting options.
I know a couple ibankers who did finance and worked at Australian banks like Macquarie first but not many.
I don't think Australian unis are up to par with their networking and recruiting, also the average student at U Syd has nothing on the Ivies...I know because I went to both UNSW and then Princeton. Australian uni was kind of a joke in comparison. But if you did well and are motivated, I don't think that anything is stopping you...it may take a while but its doable.
Suck a dick all you Aussies, I am from South Africa originally...
How does the University of Queensland rank?
Australian degree esp ANU for techie and Mel business school are well recognised in UK. Am positive it shud be same in US alsoo
