IB Summer Analyst Wardrobe?

Hey Everyone!

I will be interning at a BB in NYC this summer. I come from a first gen background and don’t know anybody in the industry, also I’m from a non target so there’s not many alumni i can speak to.

I was wondering what I should buy in order to wear during the internship. What specific brands do you recommend, like for shoes, dress shirts and what suit is recommended. Something decent that won’t break the bank.

Thanks.

you dont need much. get 4 suit pants (2 blue 2 gray; i got custom wool ones from asia for cheap, but you can just get them from like burlington no one gaf) and steam them after you come home. i also got the charles tyrhwitt 3 for 99 deal and bought a bunch of few blue and white shirts. get a matching jacket to your pants but i only wore it like twice and left it at my desk. any oxfords and matching color belt works—i would come to the office in sneakers and change my shoes at the desk.

looking back i would not splurge on a custom suit or anything its lowk a waste for the internship. maybe allen edmonds and a suitsupply suit would be nice but the analysts in my group would just show up in cole haan sneakers and lulu pants, so i didnt feel the need.

also pro-tip: get a shit ton of underwear so you dont need to care about laundry unless your place has indoor w/d. also i rec undershirts ik not everyone wears them but i sweat a ton and the uniqlo ones are really nice to not ruin your shirt after being crammed on the subway

Assuming you’re a guy…

get shirts from Charles Tyrwhitt - they’re decent quality and cheap on promotion. Stick with blues and whites.

For the suit, no need to get anything too expensive. Most important thing is making sure it fits you correctly. If you can, get some tailoring done if it doesn’t fit well off the rack. I liked Tommy Hilfiger for my suit during my internship. Stick with a conservative navy or charcoal, never get a black suit.

For shoes, I’d recommend black oxfords. Make sure your belt is matching in color.

Agree w/ comments above, keep it simple and don't stress about it.  On shoes I know some people are going to say wear sneakers on your way to work . . while I'm sure that's fine, it's going to feel and look weird with your work pants so I'd say get a pair of cheap loafers with rubber soles for getting to and from work.

Those are probably fine to wear in the office all day too.  But whether you're changing into oxfords or not, I think it's a better move than sneakers.
