IB with Best TMT group in London

Hi guys,

I'll be attending MFin program at Cambridge this coming fall and hoping to secure a fulltime M&A position in London as soon as I graduate in 2017. I have always been interested in the TMT sector and was wondering if you have any suggestions on which IB (boutique or BB) I should aim for?

Looking for suggestions in terms of deal flow and type/size of clients/deals involved.

I know that in the US, Morgan Stanley and Goldman are leading the league table in TMT deals. But what about the UK?

Any suggestions on the boutique firms? I know that Qatalyst has an office in London but I'm not sure how reputable they are in the UK? Any other recommended boutiques in the UK with specialization in TMT?

Thanks in advance guys!

Currently at BB in London as a summer associate in TMT and whilst still being in a 120 hour + week, I can confirm this. Pure hell.

Don't waste your life only thinking about money and prestige

Top names in London are: Morgan Stanley Goldman Sachs Arma Partners JPM

Not sure about other BB, but think Barclays and BAML are ok

Qatalyst is rather weak and other boutiques like Torch and GP bullhound are only active in the smaller deal sizes

LionTree Advisors, Arma Partners and GP Bullhound are pretty solid TMT boutiques. Competitive pay, interesting deals and exit opps aren't bad.

PJT Partners aren't specifically TMT but some of their recent TMT deals have been impressive (Sky-Comcast, Sprint-T-Mobile, Cablevision - Altice and Yahoo-Verizon). This applies to a couple other EBs who get good TMT deals thrown their way (such as Centerview and Moelis).

What you should figure out is do you want to have TMT exposure at a very big firm (BB) where you will perhaps have less individual responsibility on deals? Do you want to have TMT exposure at a solid and growing place (EB) where you will be very active in high profile deals? Or do you want to get a very in-depth understanding of the industry by being very involved in smaller deals (TMT boutique) that are only TMT?

Hi everyone,

I am at one of the low end tech boutiques (Analyst2). Previous experiences include M&A execution at Tier2 Bank and another low end TMT. Whats a good way to get into the likes of Jefferies etc? Hear Arma culture is aweful. Also not big outside UK. Jeff has good Tech team. I really want to break into Tech PE one day.

Background- UCL undergrad, LSE masters. 1 yr internhips, 1.5 yrs FT exp. have 1yr gap on CV so had to start at low end...I don’t know if I should do mba or not. Any comments would be appreciated! Thanks!
