IB without the brutal hours?

Interned at a top BB and really enjoyed the work. The hours, however, crushed me. Wondering if there are any banks with better hours (i.e. 60 a week) that aren’t shit - willing to sacrifice comp/prestige, as long as the work quality is still strong / there is a good learning experience.

If you're looking for investment banking roles with better hours while still maintaining decent work quality and learning opportunities, here are some options based on the most helpful WSO content:

  1. Banks with Better Work-Life Balance:

    • Credit Suisse, Wells Fargo, and SunTrust Robinson Humphrey are often highlighted for having better work-life balance compared to other firms. These banks are known for slightly more manageable hours while still offering solid deal experience.
  2. Middle-Market Banks:

    • Middle-market firms generally have less grueling hours compared to bulge brackets. While the compensation and prestige might not match top-tier BBs, the work quality and learning opportunities can still be strong. Examples include Jefferies, Houlihan Lokey, and William Blair.
  3. Boutique Banks:

    • Some boutique banks, especially those focused on specific sectors or advisory work, may offer better hours. However, this can vary widely depending on the firm and team.
  4. Equity Research as an Alternative:

    • If you're open to pivoting slightly, Equity Research (ER) offers a much better lifestyle compared to IB. ER professionals typically work around 60-70 hours a week, with free Saturdays and more predictable schedules. The work is intellectually stimulating, and the stress levels are generally lower outside of earnings season.

While no IB role will truly be "easy hours," these options can provide a more sustainable balance without completely sacrificing the quality of work or learning experience.

Not entirely true - I still see their LevFin and DCM groups on a bunch of deals. Not sure about their sector bankers though

Doesn’t matter about deal flow some of the MM shops run u to the bone in pitches. Lifestyle doesn’t improve and arguable is better with more deals than pitches because everyone from the top becomes way more neurotic with the latter
