IB/CB after MPA (think Columbia SIPA, Harvard HKS)

Background:

2-year MPA (Columbia/Harvard/Chicago)
Prior experience: World Bank – Treasury
2025 Summer internship - EBRD (European Bank for Reconstruction and Devpt)

Career objective: Long-term interest in M&A investment banking, but I’m aware that most IB hiring is funneled through structured summer associate recruiting, which may limit direct entry post-MPA. Given that, I’m also evaluating corporate/retail banking.

How realistic is a transition into M&A IB post-MPA without a traditional pre-MBA IB background?
Do I have a chance to recruit for full-time 2026 corporate/retail banking analyst/associate roles? If so, which banks should I target?

“I recently had my first roadmap meeting with a mentor from WSO Academy, and it was truly a pleasure. We had such an open, genuine, and insightful conversation. What I appreciated most was how closely his background, career path, and long-term vision aligned with my own ambitions. It was almost as if we shared the same goals and outlook on the future, which made the conversation even more valuable. We discussed a wide range of topics, including starting my career in an analyst role in the APAC region, potential pathways into private equity, and how to eventually transition into the U.S. market.
