IBD Desk Placement Networking

The 'networking' period starts soon, I'm not aware of any in person events so am unsure as to what to do and who to reach out to. Do I LinkedIn message analysts and associates asking for a quick teams chat ? or do I reach out to VP's and above as well?

TIA

Based on the most helpful WSO content, here's how you can approach networking for IBD desk placement:

  1. Who to Reach Out To:

    • Focus primarily on analysts and associates. They are closer to your age, have recently gone through the same process, and are more likely to have time to help you. They can provide valuable insights into the day-to-day role and the desk culture.
    • While VPs and above hold more influence and can potentially guarantee interviews, they are often busier, more removed from the process, and less likely to relate to your current position. However, it’s still worth reaching out to them for advice or insights, especially if you share a connection (e.g., alumni, mutual interests).
  2. How to Reach Out:

    • Use LinkedIn to identify potential contacts. Start with alumni or individuals with something in common with you (e.g., same school, city, or background).
    • Send a polite and concise message asking for a quick chat. For example: > "Hi Name, I’m [Your Name], currently [Your Position/School]. I’m very interested in learning more about [Firm/Desk] and would greatly appreciate 10-15 minutes of your time for a quick chat. I’d love to hear about your experience and any advice you might have. Thank you!"
  3. Timing and Strategy:

    • Reach out early in the networking period to maximize your chances of getting responses.
    • If you don’t get replies, follow up politely after a week or so.
    • Be prepared for virtual chats (e.g., Teams, Zoom) since in-person events may not be available.
  4. Additional Tips:

    • Keep your conversations professional but personable. Show genuine interest in their experiences and insights.
    • Always express gratitude for their time and follow up with a thank-you message after the chat.

By targeting analysts and associates while also selectively reaching out to VPs and above, you can build a well-rounded network to support your desk placement efforts. Good luck!
