Identifying the Closest Competitor
I have an interview coming up, and I've been asked to prepare an answer to following question:
Who do you feel is X's closest competitor and why (X being the company they gave me)?
How would you go about this?

Correct me if I am wrong, but isn't that almost entirely subjective? I mean obviously if your company is Intel and you pick McDonalds as a closest competitor, that would be stupid, but besides that...
In the time you took to make this post I would have called and asked the company who they think their closest competitor is and why and/or read a 10-k or called investor relations if they are public. Contact info and 10-K's are on the interweb.
And then you should break down revenue streams, product lines, and geographies and peek at profit margins/revenue growth and see just how well they compare to be sure.
Go.
