I'm lost... What can I do?

I'm currently a 1st year MSc student at Bocconi, enrolled in a course focused on accounting and corporate finance. I'm starting an unpaid internship this summer in a M&A micro-boutique based in Milan. Applied to more than 100 positions and the only interview I got was with this small boutique that I contacted on LinkedIn.

I'm pretty confident about my technicals, I did different exams that included the most common valuation methods, I'm also studying for a Fair Value exam and I'm learning a lot about intangible valuations.

I had a pretty average GPA in my bachelor and now I'm doing better but I still feel like I've already lost the train :/ ... Do you have some advice on what am I missing to become a perfect candidate?

To turn things around and position yourself as a stronger candidate, here’s a roadmap based on the most helpful WSO content:

1. Maximize Your Internship Experience

  • Outshine at the Boutique: Even though it’s unpaid, treat this internship as a golden opportunity. Focus on delivering exceptional work, especially on large projects, but don’t neglect smaller tasks like responding to emails promptly or completing minor assignments efficiently. These details showcase your reliability and attention to detail.
  • Network Within the Firm: Build relationships with senior professionals and peers. They can provide referrals or recommendations for future roles.

2. Leverage Networking Aggressively

  • LinkedIn Outreach: Continue reaching out to professionals on LinkedIn, but refine your approach. Personalize your messages by referencing their background or recent deals they’ve worked on.
  • Alumni Connections: Tap into Bocconi’s alumni network. Alumni are often more willing to help students from their alma mater.
  • WSO LinkedIn Group: Join the WSO LinkedIn group and participate in discussions. It’s a great way to connect with like-minded individuals and industry professionals.

3. Enhance Your Profile

  • Leadership Roles: If you’re not already involved in clubs or organizations, join and aim for leadership positions. For example, becoming a leader in a finance or investment club can significantly boost your resume.
  • Certifications: Consider pursuing certifications like CFA Level 1 or FMVA to demonstrate your commitment to finance and enhance your technical skills.
  • Projects: Work on side projects, such as creating valuation models or writing investment theses, and showcase them on your LinkedIn profile or resume.

4. Refine Your Application Strategy

  • Tailor Applications: Customize your resume and cover letter for each role. Highlight specific skills or experiences that align with the job description.
  • Focus on Smaller Firms: While applying to large firms is important, don’t overlook smaller boutiques or regional firms where competition might be less intense.
  • Follow Up: After applying, follow up with recruiters or hiring managers to express your interest and inquire about the status of your application.

5. Prepare for Future Interviews

  • Behavioral Mastery: Practice answering behavioral questions confidently. Use frameworks like STAR (Situation, Task, Action, Result) to structure your responses.
  • Technical Excellence: Keep honing your technical skills. The WSO Investment Banking Interview Prep Course and Technical Guide are excellent resources to ensure you’re ready for any technical question.

6. Stay Persistent and Positive

  • Don’t Get Discouraged: It’s easy to feel like you’ve “missed the train,” but many professionals have faced similar challenges and succeeded. Keep pushing forward.
  • Assess and Adapt: Reflect on what might not be working in your current approach and adjust accordingly. For example, if your GPA is a concern, emphasize your recent academic improvement and practical skills.

Remember, it only takes one connection or opportunity to change your trajectory. Keep grinding, and you’ll get there!
