Importance of Networking/Connections

How beneficial is it to have a connection to help in the 2020 investment banking recruitment process? For JP Morgan or Goldman Sachs, how helpful is it having an analyst, associate, VP, MD push for you? Is it essential and does it really help or will HR stop any of that?

It is extremely helpful to have someone on the other side vouch for you so you get your resume pulled for the first initial interview. Then from there, it is all up to you unless a VP/MD really wants you then you are usually set.

Just so you know for reference, when I was in IB at a BB/elite boutique, we would go through a deck of hundrends of resumes (that have already usually been filtered by GPA) and spend 5 seconds on each resume. We would be 10-20 to interview usually, depending on how many candidates we needed.
