IB hiring process for new grads is over. You're applying for experienced hire positions at this point and HR will not give you proper interviews since you lack full-time experience. That being said, if you're interested in trading -- try applying at Optiver, Flow Traders, or Five Rings Capital -- great prop trading firms with comparable salaries and much less hours. GL
I have worked at a multi start hedge fund as a research analyst before, hated screening for stocks and I am not willing to take any risks with my own capital.
It's getting late for this, but you could try an MSF program immediately after undergrad. This would allow you to apply for SA positions this summer and I'm sure some boutiques or lower MM are still looking for SAs.
I have had a couple summer analyst interviews already, I BS'd and said that I was doing an extra semester. Still waiting to hear back from some of them, but I don't want to wait another year to start FT.
Are you getting any interviews at all? If so, how are they going?
I think you need to break your recruiting strategy into two steps. First off, you need to work on explaining your lack of a return offer. Just to be frank, not getting a return offer is a big red flag, and every banker will press you on it. Second off, I would start reaching out to boutiques. I would strongly suggest not going the "delay graduation by a semester and do an SA" route. Instead, I would start off at a boutique, and after six months to a year, try lateraling to a larger bank (check out my lateraling guide when that time comes). I think that the added work experience will benefit you much more than another internship and semester of schooling.
Yes I have had 3 interviews at BB & EB, but that was back in September. Had 4 interviews at various MM & boutiques from Oct to early Jan from cold-emailing and applying online. But recently I haven't been getting any interviews, a lot of response saying my resume is impressive, but I haven't had an interview in almost a month. I really don't want to do SA again tbh, I have loans for school and purchased a car recently, so I really need cash flow come April. Your right, I got pressed a lot on not receiving a return offer, my answer was that the group was being restructured so they were not sure if they could take on 2 new analysts, I don't know if that is a believable answer. I haven't been doing to well in interviews, I get pressed a lot on my deal experience, and tbh I only worked on parts of deals such as writing cims or organizing data rooms, so I don't know all the specifics of every deal. I am really good at technical questions, because I have been practicing questions since summer analyst recruiting last year.
Get a temp position in the meantime and keep looking.
Yeah I have been working part time as a tutor for first year students, helps bring in some money in the meantime.
Are regional boutiques still recruiting? I'm in a very similar situation as OP and have been feeling like a huge failure recently since nothing has been going right.
I think most of the recruiting for boutiques happened in Nov to late Dec.
PM me your resume
Sorry forgot to update, I just got a verbal offer today from a MM IB I interviewed with a month ago !
congrats on the offer
