Incoming SA 2027: Is AI Going To Drive Return Rates Down

Going to a top BB/EB (historically 80-95% return rate), with my coverage/program with SAs on the low end of the historical classes (albeit with very impressive deal flow).

Wanted to hear thoughts from those who are currently/formerly in seats on where things may lie for next summer.

I know AI can't be trusted for end-to-end workflows and requires a lot of auditing/harness/verification on the underlying model, but assuming the current trajectory (or even slight acceleration), could it be possible that return rates fall for SA 27 > FT28?

Not to mention, Dimon/BofA's CEO/Jane Fraser and even David Solomon have said AI has gotten scary good and are even projecting cutting headcount.

If so, what should we do to be prepared in case things do go South?

AI's impact on return rates for summer analysts (SA) transitioning to full-time (FT) roles is a hot topic, especially with the increasing adoption of automation in investment banking. Based on the most helpful WSO content, here are some key considerations and actionable steps:

1. AI's Role in Investment Banking

  • While AI is advancing rapidly, it is not yet capable of fully replacing human judgment, especially in areas like deal structuring, client relationships, and strategic decision-making. However, it is increasingly being used to streamline repetitive tasks (e.g., financial modeling, data analysis, and pitchbook preparation).
  • CEOs like Jamie Dimon and David Solomon have indeed highlighted AI's potential to reduce headcount, but this is likely to affect operational roles more than front-office positions in the short term.

2. Return Rates and AI

  • Historically, top BB/EB firms have maintained high return rates (80-95%), and deal flow remains a critical factor in determining headcount needs. If your program has strong deal flow, this is a positive indicator for maintaining return rates.
  • AI could lead to a slight reduction in analyst headcount over time, but firms will still prioritize retaining top-performing interns who demonstrate value beyond tasks that can be automated.

3. How to Prepare for Potential Challenges

To safeguard your position and stand out, focus on the following: - Master Technical Skills: Ensure you're proficient in financial modeling, Excel, and other technical tools. Even with AI, these skills remain essential. - Develop Soft Skills: Build strong relationships with your team, demonstrate leadership, and show initiative. These qualities are irreplaceable by AI. - Stay Updated on AI Trends: Understand how AI is being implemented in your firm and industry. This knowledge can help you adapt and even leverage AI tools to improve your efficiency. - Deliver Exceptional Performance: Impress during your internship by exceeding expectations, contributing to deal success, and being a reliable team player. - Network Strategically: Build a strong network within your firm to increase your visibility and advocate for your return offer.

4. Final Thoughts

While AI may introduce some uncertainty, the fundamentals of securing a return offer remain unchanged: strong performance, adaptability, and relationship-building. Focus on what you can control, and position yourself as an indispensable asset to your team.
