Intern Housing near Tribeca

Hi all — incoming IB SA here. I am going to be working in Tribeca (most of you likely know where I am working then!) and was wondering what you recommend as far as housing goes.
I have been told to be as close to the offices as possible, however that leaves me with Tribeca, FiDi, and the West Village, all of which are very expensive.
I was curious if anyone has guidance on how much I should reasonably look to pay, and if having roommates/living with others is a good or bad idea.
Thanks to everyone for your guidance.

For an incoming IB SA working in Tribeca, here's what you need to know based on the most helpful WSO content:

  1. Tribeca Housing:

    • Tribeca is one of the most expensive areas in NYC. Even with roommates, you're looking at a minimum of $3,000/month. If you're covering the full rent yourself, it could be significantly higher.
    • While it's convenient for proximity to your office, it's generally not recommended unless you have a very generous budget (or "daddy's wallet," as some WSO users put it).
  2. Alternative Neighborhoods:

    • FiDi (Financial District): A popular choice for interns working downtown. Studios here range from $2,500-$3,500/month. With roommates, you can bring your share down to around $2,000/month.
    • West Village: Another great area, but expect steep prices similar to Tribeca. Nightlife and vibe are excellent, but it might not be the most budget-friendly option.
    • Hudson Square: A viable option with rents ranging from $1,500-$2,500/month. It's slightly farther from most offices but more affordable, especially with roommates.
  3. Roommates:

    • Strongly recommended to have at least one roommate to split costs. Many SAs pair up with fellow interns to make housing more affordable.
    • For example, in FiDi or Hudson Square, sharing a 2-bedroom apartment could bring your costs down to $1,500-$2,000/month.
  4. Other Tips:

    • Avoid NYU dorms. They charge around $2,400/month for subpar accommodations, and the location (in the Village) is far from both downtown and midtown offices.
    • Consider subletting or short-term rentals in areas like Murray Hill or Long Island City if you're open to commuting a bit further. These areas are more affordable and still accessible to Tribeca.

In summary, FiDi and Hudson Square are your best bets for balancing proximity and cost. Roommates are a smart move to keep expenses manageable. Good luck with your internship and housing search!
