International student and Banking crisis

Hey guys,

Guess that with this kind of market, international students definitely get hammered pretty badly since most of the firms want to cut back on their visa sponsoring thing, please let me know what is your experience is like especially those who are working right now and viewing our resume and applications. Really appreciate your input

Hate to disappoint you, but it's looking pretty grim for you right now. I am an int'l myself, and when I was applying for internships back in the spring of 07, about half of the companies that came to my school didn't sponsor. When I was applying for full time in the fall of 07, about half of those that still sponsored for internships, didn't sponsor for full time anymore (BofA, Wachovia..). The company that I ended up working for (an i-bank, something between BB and MM, but neither really) sponsored me, but from what I've heard lately, they are not sponsoring anymore either.

I feel ya man, it was pretty frustrating when I was in your shoes, and I can see it's only gotten worse since...

Good luck..

if you're applying for internship/full time in hk all the banks will sponsor a hk work permit for you (i'm US citizen). pretty cool cuz in hk you're then considered a resident and can go thru the resident immigration line at the airport which takes like 30 seconds hahaha

I'm interested in the above question as well.

As an international student attending a decent school, I've been getting hammered with the job search process; a lot of interviews, nailed the cases/technicals, only to get a call next day saying that they can't proceed with my application. One of the interviewers for a prop shop that I interviewed with even said that my interview was "outstanding" at the end of the interview. But then he asked me to fill out a form and it had the inevitable "Will you require sponsorship in the future?". When he saw me write down "Yes", his face actually grimaced a little and he talked about how hard it was to sponsor international students, as the process is lottery-based. Unsurprisingly, I got a call that night saying that I was dinged (the interviewer however was really nice and he told me that I aced the technicals, and wished me the best of luck in the interview process).

Kind of disheartening, but you just gotta keep going and going.

Sorry to hear about your experience. International students will have a very hard time in this market. There are a few select firms that still sponsor and those are Credit Suisse, Deutsche Bank, Goldman Sachs and Morgan Stanley. Hong Kong does sponsor all their employees and the process is fairly quick. I remember international students had the opportunity to work in the UK if the US Visa didn't come through but that is no longer an option. I believe it's pretty hard to get a Visa in the UK too. If you can speak mandarin, korean etc. then you can do IBD in HK whereas if you're looking for opportunities in sales and trading, you don't need to know the language. If you want to work in Japan, you need to be able to speak Japanese.

Don't listen to indian-banker; he has no idea wtf he's talking about. He just likes to reply to threads and mention DB, the sub-par bank for which he worked, in capital markets, the sub-par group in which he worked, in Singapore, the sub-par market in which he worked. And then he'll throw up some other random bank names up there to make it seem as if his claim is valid and he's not just fan-boying DB.

I know for a fact that 1, of not more, of those banks that he listed is not sponsoring illegals, I mean internationals, this coming year.

I maybe wrong but last time I checked these were the banks but you may be right that one of those probably has stopped taking internationals. Which bank is it? p.s I worked in commodities trading which by no means is a sub par group.

you are one angry little pissant. the good thing is, it's pretty tough to keep that kind of personality under wraps in the real world. it'll come through, sooner or later. when it does, you're be on a one-way ticket back to your parents' basement. good riddance.

Agreed and well said, curiousmonkey.

What da hell is the problem with this guy anyway?

B2's attitude towards immigrants/international students is reflective of his own immigrant roots. His dad probably came to the USA in a leaky boat to work as a waiter in a Chinatown restaurant.

It explains a lot of his angst on this board - it stems from an inferiority complex towards himself, his family and his cultural heritage. The fact that hot girls won't take a second look at his puny self doesn't help either.

Once you understand where he's coming from, you cease to be irritated by him, and you are able to look at him with pity and generosity.

If you want to work in the US, getting a work permit will be extremely though. Getting work permits for HK/Sing is not at all that difficult which simply has to do with the immigration policies of these countries and not necessarily with whether a bank "willing" to sponsor internationals. So to the OP, I would try applying to places outside of the US, preferably Asia. Europe can be equally difficult to get work permits as it is in the US.
