I want to work in NY next summer but I'm a Canadian. I'm only a freshman, so working at a major firm will be extremely difficult to achieve by next summer. My plan is to just work for a smaller firm for free, since from what I've heard, smaller firms don't really like to give out student visas. I assume if it's all under the table, most firms would be okay with that, right?

If you're a freshman, you should already have a student VISA?

I honestly don't know about the under the table part. Going in accordance with the law means a lot for financial firms nowadays, especially with all these regulatory bodies snooping around..

Well I'm going to school in Canada, and my eventual goal is to work in the states. Unfortunately, I screwed around in high school, and the cost of going to a semi-target in the US is too much for me. I'm planning to ace my courses, and network into some smaller firms in NY for internships, but I'm just wondering if I will be allowed to work there for free without any VISAs.
