International working for free

Are internationals allowed to work in the US without work visas if he/she is working for free? Thanks for the answers!

Student VISA allows work.
Or if you're on tourist VISA: no, unless your moonlighting is very obscure.
If you're not from US and would like to work in the US for summer internship etc, either apply big firms so they can get you work VISAs or do virtual internships from the firm.
Or If you're an illegal immigrant??
I want to work in NY next summer but I'm a Canadian. I'm only a freshman, so working at a major firm will be extremely difficult to achieve by next summer. My plan is to just work for a smaller firm for free, since from what I've heard, smaller firms don't really like to give out student visas. I assume if it's all under the table, most firms would be okay with that, right?
If you're a freshman, you should already have a student VISA?
I honestly don't know about the under the table part. Going in accordance with the law means a lot for financial firms nowadays, especially with all these regulatory bodies snooping around..
