How common is it to get a substantial bonus at the end of your internship? I was an unpaid intern but I got paid a very small stipend every week and all my expenses paid. The expenses were quite considerable due to a long commute into London.
At the end of my internship I unexpectedly got paid a very large performance bonus.

It's definitely not common for paid internships...perhaps it happens a bit more for unpaid. Typically your bonus for an internship is a full-time job offer (and then a signing bonus if you accept it).
