Internship to help for ibd recruiting

Around what time should I contact an alumni if I'm trying to get a PE internship over the summer (for next summer obviously). By summer internship I mean one of those informal ones where you need to know someone high up and they'll create a position for you if they like you. I want to hopefully get one of those for ibd recruiting purposes. The alumni in question are all high ups at very good PE firms and according to the alumni career network at my school they're all willing to help with summer job assistance. On a related note, how exactly am I supposed to tell them (or work around) the fact that I want to get an internship there to go into a different industry (although one day I might go back to PE)? Should I be a little more forward than I usually would since they seem to have made it clear that they want to help students?

99% of people I know that recruited for summer and ft jobs were not 100% straight forward with their intentions for down the road. Don't feel bad. It's part of the game!
