Investor Relations at Megafund

Hi All,

I'm currently an analyst at a major BB and have an upcoming interview for an IR role at a megafund. I'm primarily looking for an exit that will provide a better work-life balance while also having reasonable upside. Anyone with familiar with typical working hours and comp ranges for these types of roles?

Thank you in advance for any help!

Based on the most helpful WSO content, Investor Relations (IR) roles at megafunds can indeed offer a better work-life balance compared to traditional investment banking roles. Here's what you need to know:

  1. Work Hours:

    • IR roles typically involve working around 40-60 hours per week, which is significantly less than the 70-80+ hours often seen in investment banking.
    • While the hours are generally more predictable, there can be periods of high stress, especially during fundraising cycles or when preparing for major investor meetings.
  2. Compensation:

    • Compensation for junior IR roles at megafunds can be quite competitive. It's not uncommon for juniors to earn $200K+, though this may vary depending on the fund and location.
    • One caveat is that IR professionals usually don't receive carry (or receive very limited carry), which is a significant component of compensation for investment professionals.
  3. Intangible Benefits:

    • IR roles provide excellent exposure to Limited Partners (LPs) and a vast network of investors, which can be valuable for future career opportunities.
    • These roles are particularly suited for individuals who enjoy client-facing work and relationship management, as opposed to the heavy analytical focus of traditional investment roles.

If you're looking for a role with a better lifestyle while still maintaining strong compensation and networking opportunities, IR at a megafund could be a great fit. Good luck with your interview!

I work at a mid-market PE firm and not a megafund with a team of 4. Our hours are long, like plus 60-70 each week and a lot more during investor meeting season. However, investor relations processes are very specific to the firm and I have friends who are also in PE IR that do only 40-50 hours a week. It is super important to do your due diligence on the firm and the specific team you are joining to avoid any surprises.
