Hi all,
I am starting as a first-year analyst in SF in a few weeks and am thinking about pulling the trigger on a lease. The walk is 21 min (mostly downhill).
Is this too far?

You’re totally fine. You walk downhill to work and it takes 20 minutes. Then you uber back home up to Nob Hill every night. Every analyst lives in Nob hill, Soma, or north beach
Was gonna say exactly this. Might just add, bring/keep a pair of non-dress-shoe. Walking down those hills in a dress shoe every morning might harm your ankles.

No bus?
Good point. There is a bus that runs like every five minutes. It would around 12 - 15 min. I am under the impression the bus is not great, but have never lived in SF before and know little about it.

The SF bus is fine, I didn't have any issues with it when I took it before WFH. In your case I would only take the bus if it's raining, the 21min walk in the morning will be a nice breather.
Lol get an electric scooter to speed that up because you will be crazy to walk 21 minutes home after leaving at 2am.
I was thinking I would just take an Uber every night, so the uphill won't be an inconvenience. Good idea though. Is it common to have a scooter? Will I look strange bringing one to the office?

Look, life is far too short to care about what anyone else thinks about you. As long as you're sleeping more, doing your job to the best of your ability, and great to get along with, who cares what they think about the scooter?
I live approx this far away in a different city (Toronto) but want to mention an issue I struggle with when I walk in: Sweating in the summer. If you run hot like me even a light walk in the heat will make you sweat which can range from being a minor inconvenience to a day ruiner. Just something to keep in mind
In the mornings it won't be above 60 degrees F even during the summer in SF. They will have to wear a light jacket to even be comfortable due to how windy it gets.

Just make sure you get a pair of lightweight sneakers for sidestepping needles and human feeces, and a puffy jacket to absorb any potential knife impacts from homeless nutjobs

I had a 25 minute walk to work in SF for a while and really liked it, nice way to start the day, always ubered home (company expenses of course), and since there weren’t bus routes or traffic to think about, you knew almost EXACTLY how long your commute to work is, really nice for morning meetings and getting as much sleep as possible

lol @ comments about not wanting to walk 20 minutes because that's too long, but somehow talking a subway that takes 20 minutes is okay. I'm walking 20 minutes home every night, usually past midnight, instead of ubering and expensing because I frankly enjoy it.
Enjoying a solo late night walk, especially if the city is flat, is one of the biggest pleasures.
