Lateral Move to M&A (Originally Posted: 12/09/2010)
Looking to make a lateral move into IB.
Background: From a non-target school, business background, average GPA (3.3), 2 yrs experience in Retail Brokerage performing execution equity trades, CFA Level 2 Candidate and completed one of the FIN Modeling training courses(TTS, IBI, WSP).
My QUESTION is......
What, if any value would a move to a boutique, buy side M&A (i.e. mainly DEAL SOURCING, potential for some research) shop have?
Any thoughts on exit opportunities, good or bad for B-School? Opportunity to move to reputable middle market IB or P/E shop without having to go back to school?
Opinions & advice appreciated.
Your profile isn't ideal for a lateral to IB, you'll have to network hard, M&A boutiques are a good bet. Not sure what you mean by 'potential for research' or why you'd want to do that if you're interested in PE. Buyside M&A are you referring to a small PE shop?
