Is the senior MD bullshitting me?

So, I've exchanged about 5-10 emails (I've spoken on the phone with him once also) with a Senior MD at a MM Ibanking firm. He's an alumni (non-target). I recently saw an analyst job posting on my school's career services website so I emailed him my resume inquiring about the position. He tells me that even though they have positions listed on their website (and my school's career services), they currently don't have an analyst position available. He tells me that he has forwarded my resume to the lead recruiter and will dicuss with her to follow up with me if a position were to arise.

I know that this shit could mean a million different things, I just want to bounce this off of you guys who are currently in the trenches like me. By the way, I'm not a senior or anything I've been working CF for a big ass oil company for the past 8-9 months.

What do you guys make of this scenario? Should I email the recruiter inquiring about the position that SHE listed? Maybe the MD doesn't know about this position, although its a 25 man firm and he's one of the 4 MD's at the firm.

Just wanted see what you all thought.

Thanks.

one of 3 things:

  1. he doesnt think you are cut out for the position so he's trying to be nice (more likely since he said "even though it's listed there is no spot")

  2. HR is trying to line up candidates for future needs (possible)

  3. he doesn't know about the position (possible, but in my opinion less likely given it's a 25 man shop)

...can't hurt to get your resume into HR though.

Good luck, Patrick

Not to discredit your first number, but one of the MM banks in the area keeps an analyst position for IB and associate for ER open year round, but doesn't always have a position open. This may be the case there as well since it is a 25 man shop.

To the OP, relax and wait it out for two weeks. If you get no response from the recruiter, follow up with the MD. I've been in this position in the past, and something usually happens after forwarding around the 2 week mark.

If you weren't cut out for the position he would not have e-mailed you back 5-10 times lol. (unless he is insanely nice) I've had that same problem occur a few times, I'd use the job board to contact people and they explain it is either old or it has been filled. It's not crazy to think about. If he said you had good experience and will discuss you when a position opens up he is definitely not bullshitting you

I didn't say it was your fault, I said I was blaming you.

Some firms post on my school's job board to "maintain relationships" with the school, even though there is no actual job available. He may very well be telling the truth...
