Is this reneging?

I am a sophomore looking for a summer internship. I was offered a position in the back office of a well known hedge fund. I gave a verbal commitment to the firm and they sent me a background check, however, I have yet to sign a contract. Today I had a phone conversation with an MD at a MM bank and he said that they could most likely use me in some capacity this summer. Obviously, I would prefer the MM offer because I am interested in IB for my junior year.

Hypothetically, if I was to be offered a position at the MM bank and accepted it, would that be considered reneging on the HF even though I haven't signed anything?

Thanks for the input.

Do you think that reneging is worth it in this case? What are the consequences if I did end up reneging?
