I've gone through the usual guides (WSO, BIWS). How do I now understand the drivers of businesses?

Essentially, I understand the basics of accounting, valuation, M&A, and LBO's. How do I go one step further to actually understand what makes companies tick? Do I go through initiating coverage reports? Is there a textbook that details the first principles of key drivers? Essentially I want to be able to critically think about firms and be able to give an opinion.

Would love to get the advice of the incredibly smart people on this forum. Thanks so much.
