FWIW, I met a couple of guys there and thought they were all douchebags. Analysts and associates seemed very toolish. The firm is no where near Lazard Freres in terms of prestige and exit opps.

I mean if you're asking whether it compares to BBs or big Lazard, no it's nowhere close. On the other hand, its pretty high up on the MM ladder. I hope you're able to get they're NY office. Otherwise good luck living in Minneapolis forever and merging corn companies with more corn companies and doing comparable corn analysis as well as discounted corn flow modeling.

For example, how do they compare versus Harris Williams? It seems the two are in the same space as plays on MM sell side M&A.
Solid shop (was Goldsmith Agio, then acquired in '07 by Lazard) losing a little steam the last couple years. Minneapolis office has all but vanished only a handful of senior bankers left and they are more focused on building out other offices. All the Minneapolis guys that left were old Goldsmith guys that either made a bunch of $ in the transaction and slowly left after Lazard made the acquisition, or other senior guys that tried the new platform out with Lazard for a few years and was time to do something different. Harris Williams is a better spot to land, and Lazard MM is a good back up plan.

Part of the problem stems from parent co. Lazard keeps pushing bigger deals and fees, forcing all of the senior bankers to decide to start their own shops or leave.

What do people think of the possibility of joining Lazard Middle Market? In a time like this, would it be a good option? Anyone have any idea of what exit opps might look like after an analyst stint? Thanks.
Nothing wrong with Lazard Middle Market, especially given current turmoil. Exit ops will be decent, though probably not stellar. It will be interesting to see what exit ops look like two years down the line for all banking analysts. Given the current landscape, I could probably name only a dozen or so banks that may offer you a stronger brand than Lazard Middle Market.

I was working as a summer analyst at a smaller middle market firm that was acquired by Lazard this summer. The firm is going to be incorporated into lazard as their middle market group. Would this be a good place to work, or do you think it would lose a lot of the respect lazard has because of its middle market focus?

This is just pure speculation but I believe it will be viewed as Lazard 2.0. Basically not as good as Lazard, but has the name attached, which is a big upgrade from Goldsmith Agio.
Ultimately it will come down to the types of deals you work on. Lots of deals = great experience = a gateway to good exit ops/a nice job on the resume.
Given recent events, MM may become a way bigger deal anyway. You're probably in a great spot.
