Leveraged finance summer internship london

Hi, I'll be applying to summers in a couple months (for 2025) and wanted to know your opinions about aiming towards leveraged finance rather than M&A.

Right now, im doing an internship at an asset management firm in the credit team, in which we invest in below investment grade debt (both HY bonds and leveraged loans) and have a private credit fund as well.

My questions:
- Is being placed in the leveraged finance team even a possibility?
- Since most people want M&A, is it easier to get in?
- At what point of the process should I mention/focus on leveraged finance?

Thanks.

Based on the most helpful WSO content, here are some insights regarding your questions about aiming for a leveraged finance summer internship in London:

Is being placed in the leveraged finance team even a possibility?

  • Yes, it is possible. Given your current experience in an asset management firm’s credit team, where you deal with below investment grade debt and private credit funds, you have a relevant background that can be appealing to leveraged finance teams. Your understanding of high-yield bonds and leveraged loans aligns well with the skill set required in leveraged finance.

Since most people want M&A, is it easier to get in?

  • Potentially, yes. Leveraged finance might be less competitive compared to M&A, as M&A roles are highly sought after. This could make it relatively easier to secure a position in leveraged finance, especially if you can demonstrate your relevant experience and interest in the field.

At what point of the process should I mention/focus on leveraged finance?

  • Early in the process. It’s advisable to express your interest in leveraged finance early on, both in your application materials (cover letter, resume) and during interviews. Highlight your relevant experience and explain why you are specifically interested in leveraged finance. This will help recruiters understand your focus and align your application with the right team.

Additional Tips:

  • Leverage your current experience: Emphasize your current internship experience in the credit team, focusing on your exposure to high-yield bonds, leveraged loans, and private credit funds.
  • Networking: Reach out to professionals currently working in leveraged finance to gain insights and potentially secure referrals. This can significantly boost your chances of getting noticed.
  • Skill Development: Ensure you are well-versed in financial modeling and credit analysis, as these are crucial skills for leveraged finance roles.

Good luck with your applications! If you have any more questions or need further advice, feel free to ask.
