HOw many of you on here have a linkedin or facebook account? I just signed up for a linkedin profile, but it kinda makes me uncomfortable that anyone can google me and find out where I work.

Just make sure you don't give away too much information. But just being on there should definitely not hurt you.
Can't you set it so that no one can find you unless they are your direct connection or you both share a connection?

every college kid in the country has a fb... linked in is pretty common too, both have proven to be safe enough for identity protection

There's nothing wrong with LinkedIn and it won't hurt you...but it's hardly a "stellar" or "great" networking tool.
Is it possible to set the privacy settings on LinkedIN like on Facebook so that only my friends/connections can search me and see my profile? Thanks!

I have my LinkedIn opened. In fact when I networked with one of the alums, he looked me up and told me that it looks like I have a great experience.
