Listing Failed Deals on Resume Question
Current IB analyst here. I am updating my resume and was wondering if I could include the below example:
Advised Blackstone on potential acquisition of Apple, but Apollo ended up outbidding us. The deal with Apple and Apollo was subsequently announced and closed. It was not public information that my bank was advising in this transaction, but it was documented this was an auction process with multiple bidders.
Would this be okay to disclose on my resume as: "Advised financial sponsor on potential take-private of Apple (Terminated)" - I ask this as banks often use this convention in their pitch decks.
Would this raise any red flags to a potential recruiter? Any thoughts / feedback is welcome.
Fine to include. Obviously won't get as much credit as a closed deal but people will understand the work that went into it + can voiceover the details in an interview. Wouldn't stress about compliance if the deals been publicly announced and sold elsewhere (but if not would just use project name and include a 1-line description of the target).
Agree with the above. Its not your fault the deal died + there is practically no difference between what you did vs what you would have done had it gone the other way (especially if your party was well advanced). In fact, the additional context you will mention will be well received - if you can also speak to why your party lost out (didnt meet price expectations, seller didnt like the strcuture, etc)
