London Attire for Summer Analyst
I will begin my summer analyst internship in a few months in London and have got a list of items that I will buy.
- 2-3 Suits (Navy / Dark Blue / Dark Grey)
- 5-7 Shirts (White / Sky Blue / Light Blue)
- 3-4 Trousers not including suit trousers that come with the suit (navy / dark blue etc that fit well with the suit jacket)
- 1 Shoe (Black Oxfords)
- 1 Tie (Navy)
- 2-3 Sweatshirts (Grey / Navy)
- 1 Belt (Black)
Is there anything you would add or not recommend?

- 3 suits is overkill, in summer you'll most likely be wearing shirt and trousers. You need 2 suits max, especially when you get return you can get another "fancier suit" as a reward if you wish. Also, you may change body comp until you come back as Analyst.
- 2 trousers for each suit is enough.
- Get another tie you can keep at the office and one at home, good if a senior invites you out to meet a client adhoc
- Keep a shirt + trouser in the office in case something goes wrong (e.g. coffee spill), you'll stick out like a sore thumb if you have a stain all day)
Interns aren’t meeting clients. One tie is plenty. Zero is probably enough too, ties are outdated
Maybe in your day but I know interns who have flown abroad to clients.
I did, but ties weren't needed.
in terms of the outfit attire for each day what would it look like as I cant wear the same suit twice in a week?
so i can wear just trousers and a shirt on some days, but wouldnt that look weird without the jacket when youre in the office?
could a sweater over a shirt work if im not wear a suit (not wearing 1/4 zip on the internship)
and by trousers, do you mean buy the x2 trousers of the same suit ( x2 trousers, x1 jacket)?
Why can't you wear the same suit twice a week? Are you a model on a runway or something?
My god you are really overthinking it. I assure you, the finance world is nothing like the movies/glamourizing videos on youtube. Wear the suit on the first day and you'll realize literally 99% of people don't wear a full suit in the British summer.
Yes 2x trousers, 1x jacket. You wear trousers 99% of the time, so they get worn out fast, unless you like to go commando or something.
Following comments:
Suits: 2 are enough - 1* Dark Blue 1* Dark Grey. No need for high quality (~£200) but let them get fitted afterwards by tailor!
Shirts: get 10, so you can in worst case get through 2 weeks without laundry / easy iron (e.g. CT for low effort) / would just get plain white
Trousers: 4 are enough in total - 2* for each suit
Shoes: Important get two pairs and switch every day, significantly increase life of them. Don’t save on shoes (min £200)

You can definitely wear the same suit twice per week, probably most interns / first-years don’t have 5 different suits.
For the pants, get 2 matching to each of your two jackets and just make sure to not be messy w food & to hang them up neatly than the should be fine for 4-6 weeks before you bring them to the dry cleaners. Hope that helps
In terms of the outfit for week:
Monday: will be full on suit (trouser and jacket) with tie
Tuesday: will be my suit (trouser and jacket without tie assuming no-one wears a tie)
Wednesday: pair of trousers (not part of my suit) and a shirt (maybe with a cotton sweater)
Thursday: pair of trousers (not part of my suit) and a shirt (maybe with a cotton sweater)
Friday: pair of trousers and a shirt (maybe with a cotton sweater)
With the two suits that I will have, just concerned how it gets dry cleaned in time for the next week.
I have seen that people dry clean their suits a few times a year, but if you're not dry cleaning suits every week, how do you clean / wash your suits?
(I am a council estate brokie who got an internship for this summer, so Im not familiar with these keeping suits in check, so i apologise)
Or could i just wear different trousers but rotate the jackets for 4 days (so one navy jacket on monday and wednesday and dark grey jacket on tuesday and thursday) and Friday, I'll wear trousers and shirt
You won’t need to dry clean your suit every week, I get mine done every 6-8 weeks. Granted I wear (non-suit) trousers and shirt rather than a full suit most of the time.
Get a couple of quarter zip sweaters too.
If you're a brokie don't buy more than 2 suits and NEVER dry clean every week (putting the suit on your clothing line to get some fresh air every weekend is good enough).

As an intern, you should wear a suit every day. You're there to impress and secure a job. After you have the offer and come back FT, can you start thinking about adapting more comfortable clothing.
