London or Hong Kong for IB

I have a full-time offer for IB at a MM bank in HK and also an offer for an off-cycle internship at a top 3 BB bank in London. I speak mandarin fluently, but am not as proficient in reading and writing and I grew up in London. Should I give up the security of the full-time role in HK to take the internship in London? If I did take the HK role, I would still be considering moving back to London after a few years. Any opinions on what is a better move for my long-term career?

Based on the most helpful WSO content, here are some key considerations to help you decide:

Hong Kong Full-Time Offer (MM Bank)

  1. Security of a Full-Time Role: A guaranteed full-time position provides stability and immediate career progression. This is especially valuable in a competitive job market.
  2. Mandarin Proficiency: While you are fluent in speaking Mandarin, your limited reading and writing skills could be a challenge in Hong Kong's IB environment, where strong Chinese language skills are often required for tasks like translating investment highlights.
  3. Future Relocation to London: If your long-term goal is to move back to London, starting in Hong Kong could still be a viable path. Many professionals transition from HK to London after gaining experience, especially if you build a strong network and track record.

London Off-Cycle Internship (Top 3 BB Bank)

  1. Prestige and Brand Name: A top-tier BB internship in London could significantly enhance your resume and open doors to future opportunities in Europe or globally.
  2. Networking in London: Growing up in London gives you a natural advantage in building connections locally, which could help secure a full-time role post-internship.
  3. Risk Factor: The internship does not guarantee a full-time offer, so there is a level of uncertainty. However, performing well could lead to a highly coveted full-time position at a BB.

Key Factors to Weigh

  • Long-Term Career Goals: If you are set on building your career in London, the BB internship might align better with your aspirations, despite the risk.
  • Language and Cultural Fit: Your Mandarin proficiency might limit your effectiveness in Hong Kong's IB market, where native-level skills are often preferred.
  • Risk Tolerance: Are you comfortable giving up the security of a full-time role for the potential upside of a BB offer in London?

Recommendation

If your ultimate goal is to establish a career in London and you are confident in your ability to excel during the internship, the BB opportunity in London could be the better choice. However, if you value job security and are open to starting in Hong Kong with the intention of transitioning later, the MM full-time offer is a safer bet.
