Looking for roomate in NYC

Hi y'all,

Looking for a roomate in NYC. Ideally total rent of around $4kish (but flexible) and somewhere adjacent to midtown (murray hill potentially). Will most likely be out of the apartment given working in IB (ignore title) and would consider myself clean as well. Looking to move in the first week of May, feel free to PM if you are also looking (Male 24 btw)

Based on the most helpful WSO content, here are some tips and insights for finding a roommate and housing in NYC:

  1. Popular Neighborhoods for IB Professionals:

    • Murray Hill and Gramercy are highly recommended for their proximity to Midtown offices. Rent for shared apartments in these areas typically ranges from $1.5k to $2.25k per person, depending on the setup.
    • Long Island City (LIC) is another great option, offering lower costs of living while being just 1-2 train stops from Midtown. However, nightlife in LIC is limited compared to Murray Hill.
  2. Budget and Costs:

    • For a $4k total rent, you can find a decent 2-bedroom apartment in Murray Hill or similar neighborhoods. Be prepared for upfront costs, including the first and last month's rent, a security deposit, and potentially a broker fee (usually 15% of the annual rent). This could total around $8-9k upfront.
  3. Timing and Process:

    • NYC's rental market moves quickly. It's best to start seriously looking about a month before your move-in date. Casual browsing on platforms like StreetEasy can help you get a sense of pricing and availability.
    • When you find a place, act fast. Apartments can be taken within hours of being listed.
  4. Roommate Threads:

    • WSO has several roommate threads where you can connect with others in similar situations. For example, the "2021 FT Roommate Thread" and "SA 2021 NYC Housing Thread" are great places to find potential roommates.

Feel free to post your details (budget, move-in date, preferred neighborhoods, etc.) in relevant threads or PM others who are also looking. Good luck with your search!
