2021 FT Roommate Thread

While it may be too early for apartment hunting, I thought I’d post this before Seniors who accepted FT offers frequent this site less often.

About Me

I’m an incoming 2021 analyst at a BB looking for roommates. There are not many kids from my school going into finance/business, so I thought I’d give WSO a shot.

I'm a respectful, clean, considerate and non-smoking female looking for roommates of the same character. In my free time I love to walk long distances, play and watch sports (NBA especially), read and hang out at the bar.

Purpose

The goal is to find some potential roommates and get to know each other in the next couple of months, then when the time comes in March/ April we can start looking more aggressively at apartments.

Not a female, but have basically the same personal characteristics and I'm looking for the same type of apartment in Murray Hill. Will be following this thread if anyone else is looking for the same thing. For those reading this who are in the same boat, PM me if you would like.

Following - and does anyone have any opinions on Manhattan versus Brooklyn? Have met analysts who live in each. Is Brooklyn materially less expensive or can you find relatively similar priced places in Manhattan? Would not living in Manhattan make the commute too long and life less fun or is it doable?

Honestly, 110th135th near Saint Nicholas Ave is perfect if you work in midtown. On the train from W 125st, It’s 5 minutes to Columbus circle and 25mins to canal street. By cab it varies according to traffic but times are comparable.

There are lots of bars and restaurants, so nightlife is good. You’d be walking distance from Central Park and morning side park. Also, the apartments you’d find are pretty much the same as you would in midtown or downtown—same amenities but maybe more families than bachelors/rettes.

Due to the factors above, rents are not cheap however you may be able to get a slight discount since it’s Harlem.

local - expect prices to be above nyc and think about a roommate. nightlife is downtown on university ave and it's close to stanford and the mall. if you want something slightly cheaper you could go to mountain view or menlo park. if you want to have convenience, then i would recommend living close to caltrain if you'll be working in downtown palo alto. another popular option it seems is to live in sf and take the caltrain down every day. should take about an hour each way, but if you leave past midnight, you're on your own

Whatever you do avoid Uptown 550 like the plague. Worst building I've ever lived in and management is extremely incompetent. Highly recommend Novel Atherton. Bunch of other sweet spots along the rail trail in South end. Don't recommend actually living in uptown - overpriced and nothing to do imo. Stick to Southend and along the rail trail and you'll be Golden.

Agreed. 1st year analyst and chose Novel Stonewall (now The Francis) and wish I would’ve chose southend over uptown. Thought I’d be walking to work by now so not worth the small premium but the amenities are nicer.

North loop is an awesome spot. Highly recommend HQ in downtown next to HCMC if you can find a roommate and face the city not US Bank stadium. Only a block away from the skyways. Invest in some snow/commuter shoes if you don't have a set yet. Ruined a pair of AE sleds my first year living there with all of the melted snow and salt on the sidewalks.

Lol what is this. I've heard of flex living rooms to create a 2BR but not making the only bedroom in a 1BR a flex. You should have no problem finding 3 and even 2BR apartments that are nice and large dur to covid at $1500 per person in even trendy neighborhoods such as Murray Hill.
