M&A team in a APOLLO backed company
Hey guys,
I have received an offer from a insurance company backed by Apollo (Same business as Athene in the US) for the M&A team. Same base and bonus as a bulge bracket and the deal flow is big since Apollo is agressivelly acquiring insurance portfolios and companies.
what do you think? could this be a great opportunity?
what about exit opps?
Thank you
Exit opportunities for these gigs can be good. If you perform well, you can get to to be included on Apollo's short list of operators for future portfolio companies, I guess ultimate opportunity would be CFO / Head of M&A at a future Portco.
That said, and I'm not familiar with Apollo's approach here, these jobs can also be brutal grinds. Especially the M&A team, you end up just being an extension of the sponsor's deal time for add-ons, and it can be brutal.
Also you can easilly move to FIG in a top BB since the size of the deals and the modelling is the same right?
you also learn a lot about regulation and it could be transferable to advisory.
for sure i will get pigeonhole in FIG but can I exit to FIG PE too?
thanks buddy
If you can advance to senior/near C-suite positions at these type of Portcos, it can be fairly lucrative. Happen to know an operator in the private investing tech space that has become an expert in their niche (a back office function). Has had equity in a few companies and exits ranging from 7-8 figures. Lives a very comfortable life in a HCOL city. Underrated space to be if you're a superstar/great performer.
Great place to become more of a jack of all trades and possibly start your own thing.
All I can say is it would suck having Apollo investment and portfolio management people breathing down your neck about making deals happen from synergies that don't actually exist and then having to create them from thin air during integration. Seen it first hand. It's better than IB tho for sure especially if it pays the same.
II understand that they will put a lot of pressure on the team and there will be tight schedules.
I just want to know if the grind will be worth it (not in terms of comp, in terms of learning and exit opps)
thank you
Yeah I think it would be worth it. The best exits will be from Apollo referrals if you get tight with them because at the end of the day you work for the PortCo not the PE and recruiters will treat you as such. Athene is an interesting investment vehicle. They're trying to build out an M&A machine from what I know.
Bump
BUMP
bump
Sounds fucking terrible
Why?
I’m in a similar role, sponsors have been pretty hands off in all the deals we have done and offered support if needed. For me it’s more lifestyle choice and I’m going back to banking.
Do you think I can go to IB after this? The team does all the modeling so I will get a lot of experience
