MBA IBD Associate Recruiting

There is a lot of material on this forum regarding the Analyst recruiting process, but I was hoping some folks could shed some light on the MBA IBD Associate recruiting process.

A few questions to get the discussion going:
-Do you have to have a specific industry for your story? Some banks like Moelis and Evercore have a generalist Associate program while others place you into an industry group
-Do you need directly transferable experience pre-MBA? i.e. transaction advisory/ valuation
-How competitive is F100 corporate finance in terms of pre-MBA work experience when recruiting

Any other info from someone that has gone through the process would be much appreciated

i just have second hand info on this (from ppl i know who went through the process), but they had extremely varied backgrounds- 1 even from teach for america, and had interviews at most of the firms they wanted to

i think the ranking of the MBA school itself far outweighs your past experience when it comes to firms wanting to recruit you (M7 school with no relevant experience is probably more attractive to Goldman than School #25 with transaction experience)

could be wrong though, again I've never gone through this process, just what I've heard

  1. Yes, you will have to prepare explanations/show interest in industry groups that you are recruiting. When you are talking to a BB, you will have to discuss why you are interested in a particular coverage/product group. When you are talking to an EB, you have to sell why you want a generalist program.

  2. No you do not, you have to have a story for why you want to work in investment banking and connect that to your background and experiences. But those experiences do not need to be directly applicable (although that obviously helps).

  3. Corporate finance/Big 4 accounting are both common backgrounds for people recruiting for banking at the associate level.
